Hurricane Ian 2022

9/29/2022 (Permalink)

Hurricane Ian is the first major hurricane to impact the United States this hurricane season. It hit the Florida in the Gulf as a Category 4 hurricane on September, 28th in the early afternoon. Some people in the direct impact zone have been experiencing storm surges as high as 8ft tall, with an expectancy of another few feet to come.

As of Thursday September 29th, Hurricane Ian is exiting Florida as a tropical storm and re-entering the ocean. Meteorologists expect the storm to gain strength while over the ocean and pickup hurricane status once again before it hits South Carolina.

At SERVPRO of West Greenville County, our production members participate in STORM where our crew is always prepared to dispatch and help out our fellow SERVPRO operations to deal with any damages the storm may bring.

We have many blogs available to the public about Hurricane preparation that we hope will help prepare your home and businesses for Hurricane Ian.

National Preparedness Month 2022: Fires

9/17/2022 (Permalink)

With September being National Preparedness Month, we at SERVPRO of West Greenville County like to take this month to give our community reminders on how you can prepare your home and business against disaster. There are all types of disasters that can strike your home or business that are out of our control, but how the structure holds up to the disaster and how quickly the mitigation and remediation work is done, is completely up to you!

When preparing your home or business for a Fire, there are some important things to keep in mind, courtesy of Ready.gov.

  • Fire is FAST! In less that 30 seconds, a small flame can grow into a major fire. In minutes, a house can be engulfed in flames.
  • Fire is HOT! Heat is more threatening that flames. Room temp. in a fire can be 100 at floor level and rise to 600 at eye level.
  • Fire is DARK! It starts bright, but quickly produces black smoke and complete darkness.

To help prepare for a house fire, make sure you have done annual maintance to your fire alarms, and check them monthly to ensure they are working properly. For a business, make sure that sprinkler systems are installed properly and tested regularly. In both structures, keeping the doors closed can not only save your life, but prevent extensive smoke and soot damages to rooms not directly affected by the flames.

We have a few reminders, courtesy of Ready.gov and AmericanHumane.org.

Before preparing your home or business for Hurricane season, first determine the best way to protect yourself from winds and flooding, know where to take refuge, evacuation routes, and your risk of potential damages from the storm.

After first preparing for your safety, make sure to strengthen your home or business by brining in outdoor furniture, trimming nearby trees and bushes, and reinforcing your doors and windows. Regular maintenance of the home is crucial for protecting it against heavy weather.

The best tip SERVPRO of West Greenville County can offer is to check your insurance coverage before disaster strikes.

Fire Remediation PPE 2022

8/6/2022 (Permalink)

production member wearing PPE Fire Remediation PPE, Just Add Gloves

According to OSHA, “Personal protective equipment is worn to minimize exposure to a variety of hazards. Examples of PPE include such items as gloves, foot and eye protection, protective hearing devices (earplugs, muffs) hard hats, respirators and full body suit.

We take the use of personal protective equipment (PPE) very seriously. On every job that our production crew goes on, there is some use of PPE, even if it is just a mask.

On any fire remediation job, there can be many hazardous materials affected by the fire, such as asbestos, lead, household chemicals, and mold. These materials, on top of the smoke and soot, require additional personal protective equipment to prevent the inhalation and physical contact with any of these harmful substances.

Personal protective equipment that may be required on a fire remediation job, depending on the extent of the damages, could include:

  • Respirator/ Face Mask
  • Eye Protection
  • Foot protection
  • Gloves
  • Headwear

On any job that SERVPRO of West Greenville County's production team sets foot on, we are going to have the bare minimum of the SERVPRO Green equipment pictured to the right. No matter the size of the job, all of our trucks and vans are loaded with air movers, dehumidifiers, and air scrubbers.

An air mover is a high power fan that blows air into the affected space to dry the area as efficiently as possible. Our crew arranges the equipment often to assure maximum drying.

Air Scrubber

An air scrubber helps to remove toxins and odors from the affected space, such as fire or mold smell.

Dehumidifier

A dehumidifier works hand in hand with the air mover to help dry the affected space. It can help to stop an microbial growth from happening.

These are just a few of the tools that our crew use to help mitigate the water, fire, or mold damage from your home or business. Some jobs require more specialized equipment to get the job done. Make sure to check out our blog on specialized SERVPRO equipment that we may use on larger jobs.

This Simpsonville, South Carolina customer called us with a report of significant water loss to their home. They themselves were unsuccessful in finding the leak themselves, so they contacted a plumber to come out and find and fix the issue before SERVPRO of West Greenville County water mitigation services began. The entire downstairs was affected as well as three quarters of the upstairs. Before we even arrived, the ceiling in the downstairs had begun to drop due to over saturation.

Once our production team walked through the home with the owner, they explained to the customer the process of work and that there would be extensive demolition work needed. Demolition work needed to be done in the entire master suite, laundry room, landing, hallway, spare bedroom, living room, kitchen, dining room, downstairs bathroom, storage room, mudroom, pantry, and garage. grill fire Grill Safety Tips

From the entire staff at SERVPRO of West Greenville County, we want to wish everyone a very Happy and Safe Fourth of July. Although Firework safety is very important during this holiday weekend (check out our blog on Firework Safety Tips), we want to make sure our local community has some safety tips for grilling out this Fourth of July weekend.

According to the National Fire Protection Association, Grill fires have their peak in the month of July. The holidays and warm days lead to more cookouts, and more serious injuries. Here are some tips about how to use grills safely to avoid disaster and injury.

All Grills

  • Use propane or charcoal grills outdoors only. Place grills away from the home or deck railings and out from under eaves or overhanging branches.
  • Keep kids and pets at least 3 ft. away from grilling areas and never leave the grill unattended.
  • Keep grills clean by removing grease or fat buildup from the grill and tray below. Always make sure the gas grill lid is open before lighting it.

Propane Grills

  • Check the gas tank hose for leaks before using it.
  • If you smell gas while cooking, immediately move away from the grill and call the fire department. Do not attempt to move the grill.
  • If the flame goes out, turn the grill and gas off and wait at least 5 minutes before re-lighting.

Charcoal Grills

  • If using starter fluid, use only charcoal starter fluid.
  • If using electric charcoal starter, make sure to use an extension cord for outdoor use.
  • Keep charcoal fluid out of reach of children and away from heat sources. Never add charcoal fluid or any other flammable liquids to the fire.
  • When finished, let coals cool completely before transferring to a metal container for disposal.

Inspection of Storm Damage

6/13/2022 (Permalink)

Most of the storms that we see during the summer here in the Upstate of South Carolina do not leave extensive damages on the outsides of our homes. However, tornadoes and thunderstorms are much more likely to occur over the summer months, and these storms could leave you with some big damages.

After a big storm passes, it is always a good idea to provide an initial inspection of your home or business, before you call the professionals in for help. Doing this will allow you to communicate the extent and severity of the damages, giving us at SERVPRO of West Greenville County a better ide of what we are coming into.

For this initial inspection, we recommend to check your roof, windows, doors, shudders and your HVAC. If you see any extensive damages, make sure to record them to make information more accessible for insurance and your restoration/mitigation company.

Summer 2022 Storm Damage

4/1/2022 (Permalink)

As the summer months approach, so do the storms that the change in air temperature and wind speeds bring. Summer storms tend to be more harsh than the ones that we in the Upstate of South Carolina experience in the other months. The best way for you to prepare for these summer storms is to make sure your house is prepared in advance. Here are some things you can do to help prepare your home or business for the coming summer storms.

  • Make sure you have the proper insurance to protect your home or business from a strong summer storm.
  • Remove or trim all trees that are dead or have heavy hanging limbs.
  • Keep the property around your home or  business free of all debris that could cause damage if blown around by the wind.
  • Check that all windows are properly installed and do not have broken seals or glass.
  • Clean out gutters of all debris to prevent them becoming clogged with heavy rainfall.

Even if you are completely prepared for the coming summer storms, there is still the possibility of damages that are not preventable. Things like strong wind, flooding, and lightning are not preventable and can cause serious damage to your structure. If you do suffer water, fire, or mold damage from summer storms, call the professionals at SERVPRO of West Greenville County to come out and take care of the job.

Why You Should Use High Gloss Paint

3/24/2022 (Permalink)

At SERVPRO of West Greenville County, our production crew have cleaned every type of surface and material imaginable. High-gloss paint is one of the easiest surface for us to clean. It is great for cleaning off smelly smoke residues and is resistant to absorbing moisture.

According to Laguna Painting, "High gloss paints are typically solid, light-reflective, and ultra-shiny. They are the simplest to clean and most durable paint sheen of them all. They are as tough as the paint that you see on appliances."

It is the best paint you can use for high moisture areas of your home that are most likely to endure water damage from the elements, like sunrooms and garages.

Even when the correct steps are taken to help prevent disaster, water damage is not always preventable. If disaster should strike, call us at SERVPRO of West Greenville County at (864)-292-8570 for our water mitigation services.

Categories of Water Damage 2022

2/28/2022 (Permalink)

Often times after someone has experienced water damage in their home, they do not know what the next step is. An important part of knowing what to do next, is knowing what kind of water you are dealing with. So that SERVPRO West Greenville County can help you as fast as possible, here are some helpful tips to look for when dealing with water damage in your home. The categories of water damage are defined by the Institute of International Cleaning and Restoration Certification (IICRC).

Category 1 (White Water)

Category 1 water damage is caused by water that does not contain contaminates that pose a threat to your health, or clean water. Clean water damage can come from things like a malfunctioning appliance, supply lines, and rainwater. Although category 1 home floods are safe to clean up yourself, it is important to know that clean water can quickly turn into category 2 water damage if left standing for as little as 48 hours.

Category 2 (Grey Water)

Category 2 water damage, sometimes also referred to as greywater, refers to water that is not sewage, but does contain contaminants. This can include water damage that comes from washing machines, dishwashers, bathtubs, sinks, or an overflowing plumbing fixture. Floodwater that comes from a weather event is also put into the greywater category. If your home has category 2 flooding, it is important to wear protective gear if you attempt to clean it.

 Category 3 (Black Water)

Category 3 water, or blackwater, is defined as water that is contaminated with pathogens or toxins, such as human waste. In your home, this can come from broken sewage pipes or toilets. Flooding from a weather event that enters a building as a result of a storm or hurricane, can potentially carry contaminants that puts it in the category of blackwater. Due to the nature of the water, most contents that it comes in contact with are unsalvageable and must be torn out.

If you think that your home has been affected by a Category 3 flooding, it is advisable to contact a professional to help you deal with the issue. SERVPRO West Greenville County is equipped with the right materials and crew to help make it "Like it never even happened."

The Importance of Containment on Mitigation and Remediation Jobs

1/14/2022 (Permalink)

SERVPRO of West Greenville County often uses containment on our jobs. Our production crew uses containment on all types of jobs; this includes water, fire, mold, sewage, and cleaning. Containment is an important first step that can often be overlooked.

Setting up containment barriers before the drying process can aid in avoiding cross contamination and provide a number of other benefits. Some of the reasons why it is so important to set containment are;
  • Keeping building occupants safe - before removing any unsalvageable building materials, containment barriers are set up to keep dust and any other debris within the work area.
  • Avoid cross contamination - If mold has grown on any impacted building materials needing to be removed, containment barriers will keep any airborne mold spores from cross contaminating the other parts of the site during the removal process.
  • Avoid additional clean up of unrelated areas of the site and or mold cross contamination
  • Clean the air within the affected space- A HEPA filter is used to create negative air pressure to capture any released spores and filter clean air within the contained space.

SERVPRO of West Greenville County strives to leave your business or home in as close to pre loss condition as possible, and we pride ourselves in putting your safety first.

Frozen Pipes Can Lead to Serious Water Damage

1/9/2022 (Permalink)

Did you know that water pipes bursting due to freezing temperatures is the leading cause for water damages in the winter months. The cold temperatures are back in the Upstate and with freezing weather comes the chance of frozen pipes. According to State Farm, "even a tiny crack in a pipe can spew hundreds of gallons of water causing flooding, damage to your furnace and serious structural damage. It also presents an immediate potential for mold."

There are three different leading causes of frozen pipes; quick drops in temperature, poor insulation, and thermostats being set too low. State Farm also has a few really helpful tips that could prevent your home or business from suffering water damage from frozen pipes this winter. Prepare by taking these steps before it gets too cold outside.

  • Insulate pipes. Pipe insulation in your home's crawl spaces and attic helps even if you live in an area where freezing is uncommon. Exposed pipes are most susceptible to freezing.
  • Use heat tape or heat cables. Heat tape or thermostatically controlled heat cables can be used to wrap pipes. Be sure to use products approved by an independent testing organization and only for the use intended (exterior or interior).
  • Seal leaks. Locate and seal leaks that allow cold air inside. Look for air leaks around electrical wiring, dryer vents and pipes, and use caulk or insulation to keep the cold out.
  • Secure outdoor hoses, valves and faucets. Before winter hits, disconnect garden hoses and, if possible, use an indoor valve to shut off and drain water from pipes leading to outside faucets. This reduces the chance of freezing in the short span of pipe just inside the house.
  • Let water drip. A trickle of hot and cold water might be all it takes to keep your pipes from freezing. Let warm water drip overnight when temperatures are cold, preferably from a faucet on an outside wall.
  • Adjust the thermostat. Keeping your thermostat set at the same temperature during both day and night also reduces the risk of frozen pipes. During extreme cold, this also helps reduce the strain on the furnace.
  • Open cabinet doors. This allows heat to get to un-insulated pipes under sinks and appliances near exterior walls.

If your pipes do freeze and burst this winter, and you suffer water damages you can call us anytime at SERVPRO of West Greenville County at (864)-292-8570.

Why Bleach is Left Out of Mold Remediation

1/7/2022 (Permalink)

demolition to commercial building with mold damage Demoed commercial building during mold remediation.

This commercial building suffered mold damage due to constant condensation from a nearby cooler. The customers did try to handle the issue on their own by bleaching the area when they noticed new growth. However, due to the nature of bleach, it only dyed and clean the surface area of the affected space. Naturally, the growth kept returning and they decided it was time to have a professional properly remediate the mold. Our production crew from SERVPRO West Greenville county were called out to make it "Like it never even happened."

Before any work began, air scrubbers were placed to keep the air as clean as possible during the demolition process. All affected materials were removed completely so that cleaning could begin. Throughout the entire process, management was kept informed of the work taking place. While cleaning, our crew noticed additional growth and made sure to keep them updated.

Should You Use Bleach on Mold?

12/30/2021 (Permalink)

When you notice mold in your home or business, the first thing that comes to mind is how to remove it. Chlorine bleach has become one of the most common go-to's because it is quick and easily accessible. While the bleach does visibly remove the mold growth, is it really effective in mold remediation?

The idea that bleach can help you completely get rid of mold is a common misconception. These production are marketed to make people believe this to be true. While bleach does help to wipe away microbial growth on non porous materials, it cannot do the same for things like wood or drywall. The growth spreads into the pores of the material, and though the color may change on the surface temporarily, it will return if not properly remediated.

The best way to get rid of mold, is to call a professional to help. To get rid of mold completely, you must first find the root of the cause and fix the issue. Once the source of moisture has been addressed, the affected materials often need to be completely removed and then treated.

If you are uncertain of how to address a mold issue, it is always best to call a professional. SERVPRO of West Greenville County has skilled professionals in mold remediation services. Give us a call for any Mold Remediation services at (864)-292-8570.

Steps to Take After Storm Damage

12/17/2021 (Permalink)

With tornadoes and heavy rain extending into the later months of the year, storm damage can occur any time to your home or business. While these storms can cause structural and water damage, they also pose safety and health hazards. Having a plan to deal with damages is important for your safety and the cleanup of your home.

The first thing you should do after a storm, is to take precaution when assessing the situation. Look for structural damage and broken items on the property that may be dangerous. It is important to note any smells of gas, and shut off the main line if you notice a leak. Microbial growth can also happen within 24 hours of water damage.

What is Water Mitigation?

12/3/2021 (Permalink)

If you have suffered a water loss to your home or business, you might find yourself in need of water mitigation services. However, if you have never experienced a water loss before, you might find yourself asking, 'What is water mitigation'?

FEMA defines mitigation as the process of reducing the loss of property due to the impact of a disaster. While SERVPRO of West Greenville County provides many types of mitigation services, water mitigation is the process of cleaning, sanitizing, drying, repairing, and restoring property to as close to pre loss condition as possible. Every job that our production team encounters is different and will require its own plan to complete the mitigation process.

When SERVPRO of West Greenville County is called out to a water loss, the first thing our production team will do is assess the situation. Then, depending on the extent of the damage or if there is standing water, our team will create a plan of action. If you choose to contact your insurance company, production will work closely to get everything approved to begin. The first goal is to dry out all affected contents and materials. This is done with extraction tools, dehumidifiers, and air movers to remove all humidity to eliminate a mold-friendly environment. After all materials are dry or removed, reconstruction may begin.

Water mitigation is an important process if you have suffered a water loss. Give us a call today at SERVPRO of West Greenville County. (864)-292-8570.

According to the U.S. Fire Administration, there are around 2,300 residential fires each year on Thanksgiving. This rounds up to around 26 million in property losses. 2021 Fire Prevention Week

9/28/2021 (Permalink)

The 2021 Fire Prevention week is October 3rd-9th and this year's FPW's campaign is "Learn the Sounds of Fire Safety". The objective this year is to teach about all the sounds a fire alarm or carbon monoxide monitor might make. According to the National Fire prevention Association, "there are smoke alarms and alert devices that alert people who are deaf or hard of hearing. These devices include strobe lights that flash to alert people when the smoke alarm sounds. Pillow or bed shakers designed to work with your smoke alarm also can be purchased and installed."

Smoke Alarms

  • A continued set of three loud beeps means smoke or fire.
  • A single chirp every 30 or 60 seconds means the battery is low and needs to be changed.
  • All smoke alarms must be changed after 10 years.
  • Chirping that continues after the battery is changed means the alarm is at the end of its life and the unit needs to be replaced.

Carbon Monoxide Alarms

  • A continuous set of four loud beeps means carbon monoxide is present in your home.
  • A single chirp every 30 or 60 seconds means the battery needs to be changed.
  • CO alarms also have "end of life" sounds that vary by manufacturer. This means it is time to replace the alarm.
  • Chirping that continues after the battery is changed means the alarm is at the end of its life and the unit needs to be replaced.

"Hear a Beep, Get on your feet." and "Hear a chirp, Make a change" are some good slogans to remember!

For more information about this year's fire week campaign, check out NFPA.org/Fire Prevention Week.

SERVPRO of West Greenville County has a few more tips that can be referred to in our blog "When to change your smoke alarm batteries".

Smoke Detectors; When to replace the batteries?

9/21/2021 (Permalink)

Smoke detectors are not thought of often, unless they begin beeping, letting you know that the battery is dead. Although your smoke detector does alert you when a new battery is needed, it can be defective with no warning at all. The NFPA recommends that people test their smoke detectors every month to make sure that they are working properly. It is important that when you change the batteries in one alarm, you go ahead and change the batteries in the rest of the alarms in your home. First alert gives the suggestion to use daylight savings time as a reminder to change the smoke detector batteries. This year, that day falls on November 7th!

Smoke alarms are a crucial tool to help keep your family and home safe from a fire loss. Take the extra steps to prevent disaster.

Personal Protective Equipment – Water Mitigation

8/11/2021 (Permalink)

Water mitigation jobs come in all types of variety because of the different types of water damage. The three types of water damages are white, grey, and black. Depending on which type of water our production crew is going to encounter on a job greatly effects they type of personal protective equipment they will wear.

White water jobs usually only entail a mask and some sort of foot protection, there are some water jobs that call for extra personal protective equipment. The different types of water that the loss encountered determine what kinds of PPE our crew will be sporting.

White water cause of loss would be where our crew only need a mask and foot protection. This is because white water is considered clean water. Grey water might call for a few extra pieced of PPE, like gloves and eye wear. This time of water loss might contain contaminants, so it is important to take those extra steps. Finally, Black Water is where you might see our production crew fully suited. This type of water loss can be contaminated with pathogens and toxins. At SERVPRO of West Greenville County, a black water job would entail full body suit, eyewear, gloves, and a HEPA mask.

Personal Protective Equipment – Fire Remediation

8/2/2021 (Permalink)

Personal Protective Equipment – Fire Remediation

According to OSHA, “Personal protective equipment is worn to minimize exposure to a variety of hazards. Examples of PPE include such items as gloves, foot and eye protection, protective hearing devices (earplugs, muffs) hard hats, respirators and full body suits.”

At SERVPRO of West Greenville County we take the use of personal protective equipment (PPE) very seriously.

  • Gloves
  • Headwear

While there is a science to how our production member place drying equipment based of level of saturation and materials affected, there are some general guidelines to look at to help choose the right course of action.

  • Place enough air movers to create airflow across all wet surfaces and to maintain a balance between drying equipment.
  • The number of air movers placed, depends on the situation
  • Consider the surface being dried:
    • Floors, Carpets, Walls, Ceilings, Under Cabinets, Etc.
  • (Additional airflow is needed when walls and ceilings are wet)

If you suffer water damage to your home or business, make sure you call the experts at SERVPRO of West Greenville County to come out and help mitigate the problem. We service any time of water damage, including sewage, storm, and biohazard.

Drying Science – Part 3

7/26/2021 (Permalink)

In any water mitigation job, after any standing water has been extracted, the next step is usually to dry the materials. At the beginning of a drying project, the restorer moves warm, dry air close to wet surfaces to evaporate surface and free water. The faster the air moves, the more quickly moisture is evaporated. Air moving equipment is used to enhance evaporation at the surface level and reduce drying time.  While any drying equipment is placed, our production crew regularly comes out to monitor the progress and move the equipment as needed. The drier air and higher temperature of the material, the quicker bound water will evaporate. As water evaporates from wet materials, the air directly above the wet material becomes saturated and cool. This boundary level of humid, cool air can slow evaporation. Air movers enhance the evaporation by introducing air flow at the surface level replacing a cool saturated boundary layer with warmer, drier air from dehumidifiers.

Drying Science- Part 2

7/23/2021 (Permalink)

SERVPRO of West Greenville County’s production crew uses airflow effectively to dry out affected materials.  Air movement is crucial for evaporating moisture in materials. SERVPRO green air movers do this in a couple of ways. First, as dehumidifiers produce the warm dry air, the air movers create movement that then circulates the warm dry air throughout the affected space. This helps to lower the humidity in the area. Circulation is the key! It is also important that our crew effectively uses temperature to help dry out any affected materials. Temperature creates energy, which means that a high temperature creates a higher energy. When a water molecule has more energy, the faster it moves. The faster that the molecules move, the quicker that their bonds are broken causing the state to change from liquid to vapor. Our production team uses heat to speed the movement of the moisture along, increasing the rate of evaporation.

Increasing the Material’s Temperature + Lowering the Vapor Pressure of the Air above the Material = You have created the conditions for evaporation

Drying Science – Part 1

7/14/2021 (Permalink)

Did you know that there is a precise science behind how our production team places all drying equipment?

We use something called evaporative drying which is the process of removing moisture through evaporation and dehumidification. This includes equipment like air movers and dehumidifiers. The dry air acts as a sponge to absorb all the moisture from wet surfaces. Our dehumidifiers produce the dry air, and the air movers blow the dry air across the wet surfaces to speed up the evaporation process. Drying of wet materials needs to be completed as soon as possible to prevent further damages like microbial growth.

At SERVPRO of West Greenville County, we do this by managing 3 psychrometric conditions: humidity, airflow, and temperature. The drier the airspace, the less moisture in the air, and the lower the humidity allows the moisture to evaporate faster from all affected surfaces and materials.

Summer Thunderstorm Safety

7/6/2021 (Permalink)

In the Upstate the summer is packed with many thunderstorms due to high humidity. Thunderstorms can be dangerous because they include heavy rain, lightning, and high winds. They can even go on to produce tornadoes, causing damage to local homes and businesses. A thunderstorm is considered severe when it contains large hail and/or damaging straight-line winds of 58 miles per hour or greater.

These types of storms can cause great damage to any home or business, but more importantly can pose a threat to your safety! There are some safety tips to help keep you safe during summer thunderstorms.

  • Avoid unnecessary travel

What Causes A Flooded Basement?

6/23/2021 (Permalink)

There are four common sources of water entering basements, besides mass flooding in your community

  • Basement water could leak down from the foundation walls
  • Water-saturated soils can be pushed into the basement pressure
  • Storm sewer water from the storm sewer system backing up into the home
  • Sanitary sewer water from a clog in the local sewer line, your home’s sewer line, or a combination of both backing up in the sink and floor drains

Here are some tips to make basement flooding less likely:

  • Seal the basement.
  • Install/Update a sump pump.
  • Add or update drainage.
  • Install a water leak detection system.
  • Update your windows and doors.
  • Replace your pipes.
  • Regularly check your roof for signs of damage.

Water in your basement can damage floors and walls, ruin furniture, and lead to mold within 24 hours.

When you experience a basement flooding it's important to determine if the water problems are going to recur or if it was a one-time event. Our production team can come out and extract any standing water, but if the issue keeps occurring, further damage may ensue.

If you experience any flooding in your basement, give us a call at SERVPRO of West Greenville County at (864)-292-8570.

Throughout the holiday season people tend to cook more. Many people will start cooking and leave their food unattended. If you are cooking in the oven, do not forget to turn it off!!

Decorative Lights

Make sure the lights you choose to decorate with do not have frayed wires. This could easily start an electrical fire. We recommend you do not leave lights up year-round, as the chances of that strand catching fire increases.

Candles

People also tend to light more candles during the winter and holiday season. According to the National Fire Protection Association, four of the five most dangerous days of the year for residential candle fires are Christmas, Christmas Eve, New Year’s Day, and New Year’s Eve. If you light a candle, make sure it is away from anything that could blow on it and catch fire. Also make sure it is on a sturdy surface and you don't forget to blow it out.

Christmas Trees

It is very common for a Christmas tree to catch fire if it is not treated properly. Make sure you water your Christmas tree if it is real in order to reduce the chance of it catching fire.

If you happen to experience a fire don't forget you can call SERVPRO of West Greenville County at 864-292-8570!!

Different Types of Water Damage

8/5/2020 (Permalink)

When it comes to home flooding, category 3 water damage pose the biggest threat to your immediate health and can be the most destructive.

Safety Tips to Prevent Water or Fire Damage Before You Leave for Vacation

7/6/2020 (Permalink)

With summer in full swing, everyone is now leaving their homes for a few days and going on vacation. Before you leave for vacation, you should never leave your home as is. Taking caution in order to make sure your house does not catch fire or flood while you are gone is extremely important. Here are a few tips on what you should do to your home before leaving to make sure when you return it looks just like it did before you left!

Turn off your water supply

Leaks can happen whether you are home or not. However, the last thing you want to come home to after you have been on vacation is a flooded house. Turning off your water supply should prevent any leaks in your home.

Unplug all electronics

Plugged in electronics can lead to an electrical fire. Not only will unplugging your electronics prevent your home from catching fire, but it will also allow you to save on your electrical bill.

Adjust your thermostat

Adjusting your thermostat a few degrees higher than normal will also allow you to save on your electricity bill. Only adjusting it, and not turning it completely off, will allow the air to still circulate regulating the mold and humidity in your home.

Clean out your fridge

Throw away all food that might expire while you are away. You do not want to come home to mold or an odor in your fridge from expired food.

Take out the trash

Taking out the trash before you leave will also prevent an odor in your home when you return. Not taking out your trash could also lead to bugs coming in your home.

Turn off your gas

To prevent any possible gas leaks, which can lead to your home catching fire, turn off your gas before leaving.

Check your smoke detectors

Take precaution and check your smoke detectors just in case a fire does start in your home while you are away. One of the worst things that can happen while you are not home is your house catching fire and no one knowing because your smoke detectors do not work.

Lock all doors and windows

One of the most essential steps for you to complete before leaving for vacation is locking all your doors and windows. Coming home to your home being broken into would ruin your vacation. Keep your house safe by ensuring everything is locked before you leave.

Smoke and Soot Damage After a Fire

6/24/2020 (Permalink)

If you've experienced a home or building fire, then you know how smoke and soot can damage your property.

Smoke and soot is very invasive and can penetrate various cavities within your home, causing hidden damage and odor. Our smoke damage expertise and experience allows us to inspect and accurately assess the extent of the damage to develop a comprehensive plan of action.

Smoke and soot facts:

  • Hot smoke migrates to cooler areas and upper levels of a structure.
  • Smoke flows around plumbing systems, seeping through the holes used by pipes to go from floor to floor.
  • The type of smoke may greatly affect the restoration process.

Different Types of Smoke

There are two different types of smoke–wet and dry. As a result, there are different types of soot residue after a fire. Before restoration begins, SERVPRO of West Greenville County will test the soot to determine which type of smoke damage occurred. The cleaning procedures will then be based on the information identified during pretesting. Here is some additional information:

Wet Smoke – Plastic and Rubber

  • Low heat, smoldering, pungent odor, sticky, smeary. Smoke webs are more difficult to clean.

Dry Smoke – Paper and Wood

  • Fast burning, high temperatures, heat rises therefore smoke rises.

Protein Fire Residue – Produced by evaporation of material rather than from a fire

  • Virtually invisible, discolors paints and varnishes, extreme pungent odor.

Restoration Tips for Fire Damage

6/10/2020 (Permalink)

Experiencing a fire in your home or commercial office can be terrifying and stressful. SERVPRO of West Greenville County understands the stress that comes with restoring your home after a fire, and we are here to help some of that stress go away.

Below are what we believe to be some of the most important fire damage restoration tips:

Limit Movement in the Building

Be sure to limit the amount of movement and activity in the building where the fire occurred. This prevents the soot from spreading throughout the house and becoming harder to clean. You do not want to make the damage to your home worse.

Remove Smoke Damage

A lot of the damage from a fire occurs to the walls of the home or building. Whether your walls are painted or you have wallpaper you will need to clean them. If the fire is minor, you most likely can scrub your walls with bleach and detergents to clean them. If the fire is more serious you will probably want to repaint, but give time for the walls to be cleaned and dried. Soot often appears on walls after a fire. Soot is greasy, so be sure to dust this off of the walls before cleaning them.

Remove Mold & Mildew

Often times mold and mildew appears in your home after a fire due to the water that is used to put out the fire. We highly recommend having a fire damage restoration service inspect your house for mold and mildew to help prevent another serious problem from entering your home. Here at SERVPRO we can help restore your home after a fire and make sure no mold appears!

Repair Carpet and Flooring

Just like the water used to put out the fire can cause mold and mildew, the water can also cause immense damage to your floors. Your carpet and floors end up absorbing a lot of the water that is used to put out the fire. Water can also get under and in the cracks of flooring. This then leads to water damage in your home. Luckily, we are a water and fire damage restoration service, so we can tackle both!

Clean Clothing Properly

Making sure you clean your clothes after a fire is extremely important. We want to make sure you are able to restore as many things as possible. Be sure to not smear the greasy soot into your clothing- this will be very difficult to get out. Also don't rush to put your clothes in the washing machine. Often times, getting them professionally dry cleaned will be your best option.

Clean Dishes Thoroughly

It is extremely important to wash all of your dishes thoroughly after a house fire because what you put on your dishes will be put into your body. Be sure to scrub all dishes and let them soak in a solution of water and bleach for about 20-30 minutes, then scrub some more. The solution should contain 2 tablespoons of bleach per gallon of water. Throw out any dishes that do not become fully cleaned.

Call SERVPRO of West Greenville County to help you with your fire damage restoration needs!!

Fire Safety

5/27/2020 (Permalink)

Fire safety is a very important thing to be aware of, and everyone should know the basic safety procedures to prepare for a possible fire and what to do if a fire occurs.

Preparing for Home Fires

  1. Install smoke alarms on every level of your home.
  2. Test smoke alarms every month to make sure they are working properly.
  3. Plan and discuss a fire escape plan with your family.

During a Fire

  1. Escape immediately using the best route.
  2. If a door handle or door feels warm, do not open it and get out of the home using a different route.
  3. Once you are out to the building call 911.
  4. Never go back inside for anything.
  5. If your clothes catch on fire: STOP, DROP, and ROLL!
  6. If you're stuck inside the house, cover any area where smoke might get in and find a way to signal help that you are still in the house. Do this by either calling 911 and telling them, or find a flashlight or phone light and hold it up to a window.

These are just a few of the basic rules in dealing with home fires. If you experience a home fire, SERVPRO of West Greenville County is here to make this hard situation much more bearable.

SERVPRO of West Greenville Mold Myths & Facts

4/1/2020 (Permalink)

At SERVPRO of West Greenville County we have mold remediation services. Most of the time it’s in an un-used part of the home like a basement or attic.

Some customers try to handle the project themselves and find that the mold comes back a few weeks later. Here are some myths & facts about mold and the dangers. If you think you have mold, you should contact SERVPRO of West Greenville County to discuss the plans of actions.

MYTH NO. 1 BLEACH KILLS MOLD?

Liquid bleach is a solution of chlorine in water, usually 6 percent sodium hypochlorite, thus 94 percent water. Smearing bleach on mold may appear to kill it, but the effect is superficial and very temporary. Once the chlorine is gone - and it evaporates rapidly - what's left is all that water, feeding the mold.

There are many chemicals that kill mold. They're called biocides.

MYTH No. 2
'Toxic' Mold is the only dangerous type of mold.

"Toxic" mold or "black" mold is often touted by the hucksters in the mold industry as being the one that can cause health effects, the one you must eliminate. This is pure scare tactic.

Yes, there are some strains of mold that seem to be more toxic than others. But there is no such thing as good mold, or even tolerable mold, unless you like stinky cheese. Mold in your home is a problem, because it signifies a moisture problem. Moisture inside your home enables mold growth, and it can also lead to rot, threatening the structure itself.

On top of that, any mold problem that's allowed to continue often will pave the way for the dreaded "black mold." The most infamous "black mold," stachybotrys chartarum, is what's known as a tertiary mold. It's very slow to develop and usually follows earlier mold growths, actually feeding off the previous mold colony.

MYTH No. 3, Homeowners can properly remediate mold themselves?

Homeowners are not trained or knowledgeable about mold enough to properly remediate the damages, most times homeowners cause more damage when they don’t hire a professional. Most of the errors are in the contamination process. Not using vapor barriers or the proper equipment to clean the air during removal stages. When it’s not properly sectioned off, they can cross contaminate mold threw other area of the home that previously did not have mold spores.

Fact No. 1 :  Mold is everywhere and mold problems exist indoors in every climate.

Mold is, literally, everywhere on the planet, in every climate. A house in the Mojave Desert can have a mold problem as easily as one in Florida or New Orleans.

Mold needs three things to thrive: moisture, food, and the right temperature. Moisture can collect in walls, attics and crawl spaces in the driest of climates with a little help, such as a roof or siding leak, plumbing flaw, and pressure differentials created by air conditioning, or even a poorly vented bathroom.

Food for mold is pretty much everything we build with and everything we own. Mold loves household dust... even in the kitchen sink. And the warmth mold needs is the same temperature range humans prefer.

Bottom line: Every home has mold but not every home has a mold problem. If you think you might have a mold problem, don't ignore it. Get help.

Fact No. 2 Home inspectors don't know mold.

Home inspectors - the ones who check out a house prior to sale - are generally ignorant about mold. Many inspectors will see mold and ignore it because there's no rot or obvious moisture. Others may not see it at all.

Potential Causes of Holiday Fires

12/26/2019 (Permalink)

Fires around the holidays are very common. SERVPRO of West Greenville County hopes everyone has had a fire free holiday season. Here are the main causes of holiday/winter fires:

Fireplaces

During the winter and holiday season people use their fire places more. Be sure to clean out your fireplace and watch the fire until it is completely burned out.

Cooking

Throughout the holiday season people tend to cook more. Many people will start cooking and leave their food unattended. If you are cooking in the oven, do not forget to turn it off!!

Decorative Lights

Make sure the lights you choose to decorate with do not have frayed wires. This could easily start an electrical fire. We recommend you do not leave lights up year round, as the chances of that strand catching fire increases.

Candles

People also tend to light more candles during the winter and holiday season. According to the National Fire Protection Association, four of the five most dangerous days of the year for residential candle fires are Christmas, Christmas Eve, New Year’s Day, and New Year’s Eve. If you light a candle make sure it is away from anything that could blow on it and catch fire.

African Dust Allows Less Storms to Form

9/19/2019 (Permalink)

Have you noticed that this year's hurricane season has been quieter than normal? There have not been as many tropical storms as there usually are, and part of the reason is because of this season's African dust.

The amount of African dust over the eastern and central Atlantic Ocean is inhibiting tropical storm development. Although this dust occurs almost every year, some years there is more dust than others. The dust is created in the Sahara Desert and is blown through the Caribbean Sea and Gulf Coast by strong winds. This dust creates extremely dry air over the ocean which can prevent tropical storms from progressing.

This year the African dust has prevented a lot of tropical storms from forming so far. Part of Hurricane season is still upon us, but hopefully the African dust will continue to prevent some storms from forming.

Call SERVPRO today if you experience storm damage.

Does Your West Greenville Home Have a Mold Problem?

3/29/2019 (Permalink)

Microscopic mold spores naturally occur almost everywhere, both outdoors and indoors. This makes it impossible to remove all mold from a home or business. Therefore, mold remediation reduces the mold spore count back to its natural or baseline level. Some restoration businesses advertise “mold removal” and even guarantee to remove all mold, which is a fallacy. Consider the following mold facts:

  • Mold is present almost everywhere, indoors and outdoors.
  • Mold spores are microscopic and float along in the air and may enter your home through windows, doors, or AC/heating systems or even hitch a ride indoors on your clothing or a pet.
  • Mold spores thrive on moisture. Mold spores can quickly grow into colonies when exposed to water. These colonies may produce allergens and irritants.
  • Before mold remediation can begin, any sources of water or moisture must be addressed. Otherwise, the mold may return.
  • Mold often produces a strong, musty odor and can lead you to possible mold problem areas.
  • Even higher-than-normal indoor humidity can support mold growth. Keep indoor humidity below 45 percent.

Mold can spread quickly in your home or business in as little as 48 hours. If your home or business has a mold problem, we can inspect and assess your property and use our specialized training, equipment, and expertise to remediate your mold infestation.

What You Should Know About Black Mold

7/17/2018 (Permalink)

You may have seen sensational news reports that warn about the dangers of “black mold” or “toxic mold”. These reports can be alarming and confusing so it’s beneficial to get the facts to better understand mold.

Stachybotrys Chartarum

Stachybotrys chartarum is the type of mold often called black mold. It is most likely to appear in areas that are warm, humid, and damp. Black mold can cause a musty smell, similar to dirt, in your home. Mold can come in a variety of colors. Black mold is typically a dark greenish-black color. However, just because mold is not this color does not mean it is not harmless.

You should contact us regardless of the color or type of mold. Treat any mold with caution – stay out of affected areas and don’t touch or disturb it. In many instances, multiple types of mold may exist in the same house or structure.

Call SERVPRO for Mold Remediation

6/26/2018 (Permalink)

Microscopic mold spores naturally occur almost everywhere, both outdoors and indoors. This makes it impossible to remove all mold from a home or business. Therefore, mold remediation reduces the mold spore count back to its natural or baseline level.

If you experience a mold problem, we can inspect and assess your property and use our specialized training, equipment, and expertise to remediate your mold infestation.

If you see signs of mold, call SERVPRO of West Greenville County today- 864-292-8570

Total Solar Eclipse in Greenville, SC

8/4/2017 (Permalink)

On August 21st we wish for no storms in sight and clear skies as Greenville, SC experiences the total solar eclipse. A total solar eclipse occurs when the moon moves in between the sun and earth. This total solar eclipse is extremely rare because it is the first time the path of totality exclusively will cross the United States from coast to coast in 99 years. It also is only crossing the United States, and this is the first time a total solar eclipse is visible from coast to coast of the United States and no other country in 241 years.

The eclipse is expected to pass through Greenville around 2:38 PM and will last approximately two minutes and thirty seconds. The state of South Carolina could have anywhere from 500,00 visitors to 2 million visitors.

In order to view the eclipse you need eclipse glasses certified by ISO. The only moment when it is safe to watch the total solar eclipse without safety glasses is when the moon completely blacks out the sun.

Let's hope the sky is clear and there aren't any storms that occur on August 21st in Greenville, SC. Be sure to experience this once in a life time opportunity and watch the total solar eclipse!!

Whether your fire emergency occurs in a restaurant, motel, or office building, we will respond quickly to mitigate the damage and manage the restoration project through to its completion.
